Radical collaboration

Radical collaboration

Achieving a circular, light-impact future requires more than individual effort, it depends on coordinated action across the entire value chain. As part of the Etex Group, EQUITONE has made collaboration one of the core pillars of our sustainability strategy.

The urgency is clear. In Canada, buildings contribute about 18% of total greenhouse gas emissions, and that figure rises to nearly 30% when emissions from construction materials and energy use are included (Canada Green Building Council, 2024). On the waste side, the construction industry sends nearly 4 million tonnes of materials to landfill each year, containing more than 1.8 million tonnes of embodied carbon (Circular Economy Leaders, 2023). No single company can address challenges of this scale alone.

That’s why we work openly with architects, suppliers and more to share data, align targets, and create practical solutions that can be scaled across the sector. By focusing on measurable progress and full transparency, we aim to strengthen trust, accelerate innovation, and make it easier for the building industry to shift toward truly sustainable practices.

Our starting point

We're committed to working alongside others to accelerate meaningful change in the construction sector. Etex, the parent company of EQUITONE, has joined the First Movers Coalition—a World Economic Forum initiative accelerating near-zero cement technologies through collective purchasing power. EQUITONE supports this effort as part of Etex’s wider commitment to decarbonizing construction materials.

By collaborating with architects, contractors, suppliers, and industry peers, we aim to turn shared challenges into shared solutions that reduce environmental impact across the full life cycle of buildings.

The 2030 vision

The 2030 vision
The 2030 vision

By 2030, we want to:

  • Push for transparency across the value chain, so all stakeholders —from suppliers to installers—can track impact, share data and improve practices together.
  • Establish a sustainability council of external experts to guide our strategies and and keep us accountable.
  • Forge new partnerships aimed at creating shared solutions across design, production and reuse.

EcoVadis

The globally-recognized provider of business and supplier sustainability ratings is helping us assess and improve the impact of our materials in four key areas: Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement.

Circular Flanders

With the support of the Flemish government, we are experimenting with new, circular business models, bringing partners together from across the value chain, from cement producers to installers. The focus is on improving service, recyclability and material recovery.

Valobat

In France, ETEX is involved in the VALOBAT initiative. Together with 28 industrial partners, we collect eco-contributions – annual fees as a result of the new legislation on Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) – and invest in waste recycling, the promotion of reuse and eco-design, and waste valorisation.

EPD International

We have applied for and have received Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for the entire EQUITONE range. These are independently verified and registered documents which allow us to openly communicate the environmental performance of our materials throughout their life cycle.
